THE HISTORY OF WYTHENSHAWE AND IT'S ENVIRONS
'If you wish to know the future, you must first study the past' . . .

Wythenshawe (taken from Anglo-Saxon “Withigensceaga” - ‘small wood of withy [willow] trees’) is not new - long before it became famous as being the largest Council Housing Estate in Europe and one of the first grandly designed Garden Cities in the UK, it was noted for it's rich fertile soil in the 13th century, under the name of 'Wytenscawe'. In 1351 it was called ''Wythenshagh' and in 1607 it was known as 'Withenshawe'.

This website hopefully gives a comprehensive account of Wythenshawe’s remarkable social history and heritage, including the part it played in a Revolution which paved the way for present-day Western democracy and cost a King his head.

You will find even more detailed information about Wythenshawe, plus images, on the 'FURTHER LINKS' page as well as credits for this site. More local interest and history can be found at >>
